Concern over landing fee rises

COOCHIEMUDLO Island ferry owner operator Garry Blackburn said the channel between Coochie and Victoria Point had “silted up” over 20 years and needed to be dredged, especially the accesses to jetties.

Mr Blackburn said the council should not be using state government money to dredge areas of the channel for the rival car barge service, which he said was not a State Government regulated transport service.

This months’s council Planning and Policy committee meeting was told dredging near the Victoria Point jetty was necessary to allow the car barge to turn around near the wharf.

Mr Blackburn said under the deal with the state government, after upgrading works at the jetty were completed, the council would take full control of the jetty and would start charging landing fees.
