REDLAND City Council has won three categories at this year’s Sustainable Cities Awards, hosted by Keep Australia Beautiful.

The council won the Litter Prevention category along with the Environmental Innovation and Protection section and the Water Conservation award.

It took out the Litter Prevention Award as a result of its Butt-Free program, which aimed to stop smokers throwing cigarette butts into waters around Coochiemudlo Island. Five anti-litter street signs and butt bins were installed and personal ashtrays distributed to local residents for free.

Redlands IndigiScapes played a key role in Council winning the Environmental Innovation and Protection Award thanks to its habitat and wildlife protection programs.

The council also won the Water Conservation Award for retrofitting dual-flush toilets in all council buildings and installing water tanks at key sites, and implementing water minimisation practices for sports fields, local parks, median strips and roundabouts.
