Council blamed over failing jetties

Bayside BulletinCOOCHIEMUDLO Island residents are ready to take on the state government and the Redland City Council for failing to upgrade jetties at Victoria Point and on the island by 2013.

In May 2011, council received $4.25 million to meet half the cost of replacing the council-owned Coochiemudlo Island ferry terminal and fully pay for an upgrade of the Victoria Point jetty to ensure both complied with the Disability Discrimination Act.

To date, neither jetty has been upgraded.

Island resident Peter Webb said the state’s failure to upgrade the jetty at Victoria Point was a disgrace that had resulted in his wife falling over and hurting herself.

He said the council was also partly to blame for the non-compliant jetties as it had banked the 2011 funding allocation, taken about $1.75 million in interest and made no effort to upgrade the facilities.

Redland council general manager city services Louise Rusan said the council had not acted on the upgrade works as the money was “set aside in council’s balance sheet” while the state approved the works.

Mr Webb said a letter from Premier Campbell Newman in March said the state had issued the required approvals for the upgrade to the Victoria Point jetty, but had not issued approvals for the Coochiemudlo jetty as Redland council had not applied for permits there.

“This is an untenable situation where two jetties are dangerous, people are getting hurt and the council has been given the money to fix the problem but can’t because it is hamstrung by the state government,” he said.
