Jacqui Creswell
Introducing the art and artists of Coochiemudlo
After moving to Coochiemudlo Island 21 years ago, fibre artist Jacqui Cresswell, discovered a bounty of natural and found materials.
The vines and plants provide the inspiration for her work and continue to shape and direct new forms in her practice.
Within the meditative practice of weaving, Jacqui allows the character of the materials and the chaotic patterns of the bush itself to influence the shape and flow of the work.
The aspect of hunting and gathering vines and plant materials allows Jacqui to enjoy time in the beauty and serenity of nature.
All her materials are found on the island, palm inflorescences found lying on the side of the road, weed vines like morning glory, corky passion vine, cat's claw and more, gathered from bush and garden.
They are often shaped into open basket or nest forms, creating a healing in symbolic representation of refuge and protection.
