Kerry Darton
Introducing the art and artists of Coochiemudlo
Kerry Darton is an island-based jeweller who works largely with reclaimed silver, preferring the relative affordability and malleability of that metal’s response to heat, pressure, cutting and filing. Her pieces are inspired by forms within the natural environment: the curves and smooth lines of the island’s silver, sea-smoothed, fallen tree roots, or the fragility of leaf skeletons, and the magic of shaping and transforming flat metal into new forms.
Developing her skills through coursework and mentorship, Kerry enjoys designing and forming pieces that establish an intimate relationship for the wearer. A recent commission fuses gold and silver pieces that have personal significance into an art form of intimate value for the wearer.
Through her involvement with the Artisans Collective, Kerry notes the way in which many island artists are inspired by the same place yet produce works that are so diverse.
Curlew Artisan Gallery and Ross Street Gallery on Coochiemudlo Island open 10am – 2pm, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
