Terry Byrne
Introducing the art and artists of Coochiemudlo
Terry Byrne found Coochiemudlo Island to be a haven of peace and tranquility after his counseling work.
As an artist, Terry describes the impetus behind his creative work, both visual and written, as a desire to deeply and sensually encounter and connect with the world around him.
Without direct vision, Terry allows himself to ‘feel’ both his choice of subject and the physical act of painting. Selected on intuition, Terry’s first real study of his subject is often through enlarging his photographs on his home screen. Then, working then from memory, he paints and colours the physical surface of each canvas, building layers applied with brushes, palette knives, sticks, leaves, hands and fingers shaping and feeling over textured Braille-like fields of colour.
As a member of both the Artisans Collective and the Coochie Writers Group, Terry is a keen advocate of creative exchange and conversation within the Island community.
Curlew Artisan Gallery and Ross Street Gallery on Coochiemudlo Island open 10am – 2pm, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
