Trish Miller
Introducing the art and artists of Coochiemudlo
Trish Miller has been living on the island since 2017, after arriving from Northern Rivers, NSW. Trish feels a deep, even spiritual, connection to the natural environment and walks, daily, on the beach and in the wetlands and mangroves — one of her favourite aspects of island life.
From a young age, Trish ‘made things’, creating things from fabric, fibre, wood, paper, glass and ceramics. Although she hasn’t had formal training, her work over the years as developed over the years with finesse — a delicacy and skill — that comes from a dedication to her art and natural talent.
Trish considers that her work is a creative outlet that is essential for health and happiness. “I believe everyone has a creative capacity and what a joy it is to find one that inspires you.”
Her work process includes off-loom weaving with precision-cut glass beads.
The themes, ideas, and intentions that inspire her work include the challenge of discovering and using new skills and techniques. “I try to make things that are both beautiful and useful. I like the tactility of the beads; the colors and finishes; the rhythm of weaving.”
The colours and shapes in island environment inspires her work. “If it occurs in nature, it must be ‘right’.”
There are many artists/artisans living and working on Coochiemudlo, a community that inspires Trish. She likes the idea of combining ‘genres’, for example beading and drawing. “The possibilities are endless! I believe that the creative and performing arts are essential to promoting a vibrant community and we need to support all efforts to nurture them.”
Curlew Artisan Gallery and Ross Street Gallery on Coochiemudlo Island open 10am – 2pm, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
